Point Cloud Survey

Ostick+Williams utilise Point Cloud Survey Data

The use of Point Cloud Surveys is still a relatively new concept although it has been in use by survey companies for quite some time. The technology uses a static laser positioned at various stations around the survey sight to bounce beams of light off target surfaces, up to 900,000 points are captured each second. With an accuracy of +/- 2mm and a resolution of 1 point of data for every 3mm the resulting Point Cloud provides an exact 3D replica of the site or surveyed building. This makes it very easy to visualise complex buildings, and removes the issue of missing survey data.

Ostick+Williams recently commissioned a Point Cloud survey for use on a renovation project at the David Keir building, Queens University Belfast. The project for the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department deals with highly serviced areas making a Point Cloud used in conjunction with BIM the obvious choice for service coordination. Although many Point Cloud Surveys have been commissioned in Northern Ireland, Ostick+Williams are the first architectural practice to use the raw Point Cloud data without the involvement of a third party 3D modelling company.
